What we do:
Metro Richmond Pet Savers was founded by the Richmond Animal League, Chesterfield County Humane Society and Ring Dog Rescue for the sole purpose of reducing euthanasia rates in our government shelters. By bringing together local rescue groups and municipal shelters, Metro Richmond Pet Savers has embarked on a groundbreaking effort that affords it’s members the opportunity to work as a team to save and adopt countless animals… animals that might otherwise be euthanized.

The founders recognized that while the groups and shelters could certainly find something about which they disagreed, at the end of the day, they all agreed that saving animals is priority # 1. Operating from that premise and recognizing that we are stronger as a group than we are individually, Metro Richmond Pet Savers approached local rescue groups and shelters and proposed an initiative that focuses on our mutual interests rather than our differences.

The program calls for Metro Richmond Pet Savers’ rescue groups to target a different government shelter each month and transfer as many animals from that shelter as they can reasonably accommodate. The rescue groups have each animal spayed or neutered and vaccinated in accordance with the pet’s age. On the second Saturday of each month the rescue groups and their shelter partners gather in the parking lot of a local PetSmart store and present large scale adopt-a-thons. The rescue groups bring the animals they just transferred from the target shelter and any other animals they have in their care. The shelters are encouraged to bring as many animals as their vehicles will allow.

Metro Richmond Pet Savers, with phenomenal support from PetSmart, is truly making a difference for animals in our community. Proof of that lies in the fact that each adopt-a-thon nets more adoptions that the one before. We look forward to the day when we can end our monthly events because there are no more homeless animals in the metro Richmond area.
